Goodyear Rubber Tree Plantation. Panama, ca. 1935 to 1940's. David Plowman in his catalog  www.coinsofpanama.com  states: "Tentatively attributed as tree tags for Goodyear.  Goodyear started a rubber tree plantation in Panama in 1935.  According to one source, the plantation was located on the shores of the Lake Gatun.  Information is sketchy, but apparently either a rubber tree blight or the development of synthetic rubber or both brought about the end of the project after a few years."   Shape is octagon, 62 mm or slightly more, has 2 slots.  Stamped/engraved Good Year Panama, and serial number 171.  The Good Year foot symbol is between the words Good Year.   Brass, and weight 30.90 grams.  Known serial numbers include 171, 450, 461, 467 and 474.  Various catalogs list the piece:  Plowman #CK-35; Rulau #CZ 65; Catalogo Numismatico De Panama #ID 22. .

Hotel Central Key Tag. Panama, ca. 1950's - 1960's. This item is a key tag, not an ID check.  Since it is brass and resembles an ID check, I am listing in that category.  Obverse reads Hotel Central 113 Panama.  The 113 refers to the room number.  The reverse has a double lined circle.  The outer area reads If Carried Away Return Unsealed.  The inner area reads We Guarantee Postage.  The brass key tag is shaped like a sun with rays.  Is holed for supsension at the top. The size is 3 1/10" and weight 28.96 grams.

Isthmian Canal Commission . Panama / Canal Zone, ca. 1905-07. Listed by Plowman as catalog #CK-2.1.  Obverse reads Isthmian Canal Commission around the edges.  In the center the serial number 40041.  The reverse side is blank.  The metal ID check is diamond shaped, holed as made, small number variety, brass.  Size at the angles is about 38 mm x 58 mm, and weight 10.09 grams.  Various serial numbers are known.

Isthmian Canal Commission, Plated w/hanger & ribbon. Panama / Canal Zone, ca. 1905-07. The obverse reads Isthmian Canal Commisson around the edges with the number 25223 in the center.  The reverse side is blank.  The size is about 38 mm x 58 mm at the angles.  It is diamond shape, holed as made.  The weight including the ribbon and hanger is 14.52 grams.  This ID check is similar to the one listed in brass.  This particular medal has been nickel plated.  The ID check does not photo well due to the high gloss of the plating.  Slight scuffs show up dark and distracting in the photo.  The ID check is suspended from a ribbon and hanger.  The exact purpose of this is not known.  However, speculation is that the ID check was sold at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition as a souvenir.   Many souvenirs including other ID checks were offered at the PPIE.  The black ribbon may represent mourning for the many workers lives lost while building the Panama Canal.  Further research is indicated.

Isthmian Canal Commission, Star Shape, Larger Size. Panama / Canal Zone, ca. 1-1-1906 to 7-4-1907. Listed by Plowman #CK-2.5; Hamlin #ICC-50; and Rulau #CZ A73.  This is a star shaped ID check.  It is uniface with the reverse side blank.  It reads Isthmian Canal Commission with the number 79983.  Above the words in smaller lettering is the name of the manufacturer/supplier - Am Ry. S. Co. New York.  The ID is brass, holed for suspension.  There is a similar ID that is star shaped, but slightly smaller size and with the manufacturer name listed.  The size from top point to bottom point is 53 mm and weight 9.95 grams. .

Panama Canal Employee, Photo ID, ca 1918 to 1919. Panama, ca 1918 to 1919. The ID check is a brass, uniface, encased in a ring w/loop attached.  On the reverse side is a photo of the worker.  The medal side reads Employee in the center with The Panama Canal above and Canal Zone below.  The photo side shows a man with a hatched type background behind him and his ID number 1843.  Eugene Hamlin, Jr. Indicated that the ID check dates from July 1918 to December 31, 1919.  Listed by Hamlin as #Misc-5; by Plowman as CK-3.2; and Asociacion Numismatico as ID-11.  The size is 31 mm and with the loop at the top 34 mm overall.  The weight is 7.51 grams.  Over the years I have seen many of the medals offered for sale without the brass encasement or photo.  Apparently, coming apart from the original brass encasement.  By clicking onto the ID check a 3rd photo appears, which is the original auction envelope. .

Panama Canal Square ID Check. Panama Canal Zone, 1913-1918. Employee ID check used 1914 to 1918.  Obverse reads Panama / 1335 / Canal.  Above is sloted, and in small letters Am.Ry.S.Co.N.Y. Identifies the manufacturer.  Listed in several references:  Asociacion Numismatico ID-12; Hamlin PC-5; Plowman CK-3.1; and Rulau CZ-76.  Brass, square approximately 38 mm x slightly over 38 mm, and weight 10.61 grams.  Click onto either photo and a 3rd photo will come up showing the original aution ticket.  This piece may be ex-Eugene Hamlin, Jr collection.  He consigned a number of pieces from his collection to this auction.

Provenance:

  • Kurt Kruger auction; May 28, 1986, lot #3778
  • Possibly ex-Eugene Hamlin, Jr collection

I.C.C. - Isthmian Canal Commission, Large Numbers, Employee Name, 1906. Panama, ca 1909 - 1914. Obverse has initials at the bottom, I.C.C.  The serial number 38888 above in large numbers.  Above the serial number the employee's name is engraved - A. C. Van Brocklin.  Below the number the date - Nov. 5, 1906.  The reverse side is blank. This ID check was issued between January 19, 1909 and April 1, 1914.  They became invalid after June 30, 1914.  The personalized engraving perhaps designates the employees date of hire, or some other important date for him.  Further research is needed.  The ID check is round with an oval slot at the top.  Above the slot is Am.Ry.S.Co. New York, which is the name of the manufacturer of the ID checks - American Railway Supply Co.  Listed in Asociacion Numismatico ID-8, Plowman CK-2.6, Hamlin ICC-60, and Rulau CZ74.  This piece is ex-Eugene Hamlin, Jr collection. The size is about 35.5 mm, weight 7.81 grams, and this particular piece has been nickel plated over brass.

Panama Canal 8-Sided ID Check, Employee Engraved, 1920. Panama / Canal Zone, 1920. Used from January 1, 1920 until August 1938.  The first 20,000 serial numbered ID checks were reserved for gold employees, and those 20,001 and above for silver employees.  Listed in various references including Plowman #CK-3.3; Hamlin #PC-25; Henkle # C.Z. #104; Asociacion Numismatico # ID 13; and Rulau # CZ 75.  The obverse reads Panama Canal / 4510.  Above the slot at the top is Am. Ry. S. Co. N.Y. Which stands for American Railroad Supply Co.    The reverse side of these ID checks is usually blank.  However, on this particular on is the engraving:  J. T. Burch / Jan 9 / 1920.  He probably was the employee assigned to this check number.  Possibly the date represents the date he received the check or his date of hire ?  Further research is warranted. The brass ID check is 8-sided, 38 mm from top to bottom, and varies at other angles from 36 to 38 mm.  The weight is 8.48 grams.
