Airas, Juan - David, 5c Holed (re-valuation) ca. 1890. Panama, ca 1890. Obverse reads Juan Arias David on 3 line ribbon.  Juan Arias is the individual that issued the token.  David identifies the town in the province of Chiriqui.  The reverse reads Vale / 5 / Centavos.  A large hole in the center of the token was used to re-value the token.  The hole removes parts of the name on the obverse and on the reverse the 5 and most of the dots design that would surround the 5.  On this variety there are 2 stars used as stops on the reverse between Vale / Centavos.  The denicles on the obverse side are small, and on the reverse side are larger and long.  Plowman #PT-25.12, and dates the token t ca 1890.  Rulau # Chq 22.  Copper nickel, 24.5 mm, and weight 2.87 grams.

Is a design, and a dash to either side of C.T.   The reverse side reads Good For / 50c / In Trade.  To either side of 50c is a small star.  The initials C.T. Refers to Canal Territory in the Canal Zone / Panama.  Years ago I showed the token to the late Panama specialist, Eugene Hamlin, Jr, who had worked and lived in the Canal Zone for many years.  He was familiar with the company and operator of the establishment.  I do not remember the owner's name, but perhaps it will surface in some old correspondence from Eugene Hamlin, Jr that I still have.  Copper Nickel, size about 30.5 mm, and weight 10.22 grams. .

Coat of Arms 2 1/2c, ca 1907-14. Panama, ca 1907-14. The obverse shows the Panama Coat Of Arms.  The reverse side has a large 2 1/2 in the center with the words Dos Y Medios Centesimos De Balboa around.  The size is sightly over 21 mm, and weight 4.73 grams.  The reverse side is out of rotation.  When the coin is flipped over the 2 1/2 points towards upper left.  There are a number of scratches on the obverse extending from the rim to the eagle.  The origin of this piece is unknown.  I first encountered an example at the 1971 A.N.A. Convention, when Panama coin dealer Dan Sander sold me one.  Present was Panama specialist, Dr. Edward Majilton.  Both believed the piece was a pattern for the Panama 2 1/2 cent coin of 1907 as there are similarities.  Years later Panama specialist William Randel felt this was a hacienda token ca 1914.  Over the years I have seen 4 or 5 pieces offered, all of which had some degree of circulation.  Further research is indicated.

Coll Brandon & Co., 2 1/2 Cts. Colon (Aspinwall), ca. 1864. Panama. Merchant token, no date, but ca 1864.  The obverse has a large 2 1/2 Cts within a beaded circle.  The legend reads Coll Brandon & Co. Colon (Aspinwall).  The reverse shows a steam train with a palm tree behind.  Listed By Russell Rulau in Latin American Tokens as # Col 22 (copper), 22A (brass), and 23, 24, 25 overstruck on a U.S. Large cent of 1849 or 1851; a New York Civil War card of John Matthews, 1863; or a Bank of Upper Canada 1854.  There are also a couple other varieties known:  struck an 1860 Abraham Lincoln Railsplitter of the West political medalet, DeWitt #AL1860-41; and a token not overstruck, but without the denomination - not known to me, if struck without the denomination or removed later.   The city of Aspinwall was renamed Colon around 1860 to 1863.  The exact business of Coll Brandon & Co is unknown at this time.  One of the more visually impressive tokens of Panama.  Proof-like uncirculated surfaces, this one appears to be copper.  Size is about 27.5 mm, and weight 8.91 grams.

Coll Brandon & Co, 2 1/2 Cts c/s over 1854 Bank Upper Canada Half Penny Token. Panama, ca 1864. Obverse Panama Railroad steams to right with single palm tree in background.  Reverse Coll Brandon & Co / Colon (Aspinwall) around central denomination 2 1/2 Cts.   Struck over 1854 Bank of Upper Canada halfpenny token.  The undertype interferes with  the reverse legends to a small degree.  The overstrike and undertype line up precisely on the same vertical axis.  Some little flecks of silvering on the obverse suggests that silverning remained trapped in that die when this piece was struck, perhaps from the Lincoln token overstrike that is also known.  It is possible that the token was struck by Scoville Company of Waterbury, Connecticut.  This token is ex-Q. David Bowers collection.  Size is 27.5 mm and weight 7.36 grams.
