Description

Collection oftokens & paper chits issued for the various military bases in the U.S. Canal Zone, now part of Panama.  Also, other C.Z. military items will be included.  The dates listed are estimates, and further research is incidated. Most of the chits will be photographed in stamp mounts with a black background.  The tokens & paper chits are referenced to David Plowman's site: www.coins-of-panama.com.  Other catalog listings will be also be referenced, where known. To see a clear, larger image just click onto the photo.  Note: this is an ongoing, long term project with perhaps 200 pieces total to list.***Collection is kept in the bank, and future additions will be made to the listing as photos are taken and posted periodicly.

AAIC Open Mess 5c Aluminum. Canal Zone, 1970. Obverse reads NCO Open in the center with AAIC above and Mess below.  The AAIC stands for Atlantic Area Installation Command, based in Fort Davis and also used at Fort Gulick.  Listed by Plowman as being issued in 1970 and his catalog #MT-35.05.  Asociacion Numismatico #F-9, Cunningham CZ130a, Curto SC237-5, Henkle CZ49, Plumer p.1.  Aluminum, size 22 mm and weight 1.10 grams.

Corozal NCO Club 5c Brass. Canal Zone, ca. 1940's. The obverse has a design in the center with NCO Club above and Corozal, C.Z. Below.  The reverse has 5c in the center with Good For above and In Trade below.  Undated, but believed to be ca 1940's, possibly earlier.  Listed in various catalogs Asociacion Numismatico F121, Conte Porras p.106, Cunningham CZ80a, Curto SC19-5, Plowman MT-65.05, Plumer p.3, Schimmel #22.  Brass, size 19.5 mm and weight 2.60 grams.  There is a small cud/die fill below the T of Trade.

Corozal NCO Club 10c Brass. Canal Zone, ca 1940's. The obverse has a design in the center with NCO Club above and Corozal, CZ below.  The reverse has 10c in the center with Good For above and In Trade below.  Undated, but believed to be ca-1940's, possibly earlier.  Brass, size slightly over 24 mm, and weight 4.05 grams.  Asociacion Numismatico F-122, Cunningham CZ80b, Curto SC19-10, Henkle CZ-18, Plowman MT-65.10, Plumer p.3.

Corozal NCO Club 25c Brass. Panama / Canal Zone, ca 1940's. The obverse has a design in the center with NCO Club above and Corozal, CZ below.  The reverse has 25c in the center with Good For above and In Trade below.  This particular token has the reverse rotated about 80 degrees in regard to the obverse side.  Size is slightly more than 25 mm, and weight 3.65 grams.  The token has corrosion more so on the obverse side.

Fort Kobbe, NCO Club, Lifeliners, 5c Brass. Canal Zone, Date unknown, possibly pre-1970. Brass token.  Obverse reads NCO Club, Fort Kobbe.  Lifeliners in quotes with a design above and below.  The reverse reads 5c In Trade.  The token is holed in the center.  Size is slightly over 22 mm, and weight 3.36 grams.  Asociacion Numismatico F-146, Cunningham CZ280a, Curto F83-5, Henkle CZ-56, Plowman MT-91.05, Plumer p.4.

Brass token.  Obverse reads NCO Club, Fort Kobbe.  Lifeliners in quotes with a design above and below.  The reverse reads 10c In Trade.  The token is holed in the center.  Size is a little over 25 mm, and weight 4.19 grams.  Asociacion Numismatico F-147, Cunningham CZ280b, Curto F83-10, Henkle CZ-57, Plowman MT-91.10, Plumer p.4.

Brass token.  Obverse reads NCO Club, Fort Kobbe.  Lifeliners in quotes with a design above and below.  The reverse reads 25 c In Trade.  The token is holed in the center.  Size is 28.5 mm and weight 6.07 grams.

Brass token.  Obverse reads NCO Club, Fort Kobbe.  Lifeliners in quotes with a design above and below.  The reverse reads 50c In Trade.  The token is holed in the center.  Size is 32 mm and weight 7.27 grams.   Cunningham CZ280d, Curt F83-50, Plowman MT-91.50.

Fort Kobbe, NCO Club, Lifeliners, $1 Brass. Canal Zone, Date unknown, possibly pre-1970. Brass token.  Obverse reads NCO Club, Fort Kobbe.  Lifeliners in quotes with a design above and below.  The reverse reads $1 00 In Trade.  The token is holed in the center.  Size is 34.5 mm and weigth 8.63 grams.   Asociacion Numismatico F-149, Cunningham CZ280e, Curto F83-100, Henkle CZ-59, Plowman MT-91.100, Plumer p. 4.  The $1 token, brass, holed is fairly common compared to the smaller denominations of this series.

Fort Sherman NCO Club 10c Brass, Octagon Shape. Canal Zone, ca prior 1940. The obverse has Fort Sherman in the center with N.C.O. Club above and C.Z. Below.  The reverse has 10c in the center with Good For above and In Trade below.  Listed by Asociacion Numismatico F-155, Cunningham CZ320b, Curto F179-10, Henkle CZ-64, Plowman MT-96.10, Plumer p.4.  Octagon (8-sided) shape, brass, size 22mm and weight 3.52 grams.

France Field NCO Club 5c, Brass. Canal Zone, Date unknown, ca 1940 or prior. The obverse has a design in the center with N.C.O. Club above and France Field below.  The reverse has 5c in the center with Good For above and In Trade below.  This token is the variety with the cent sign having a slanted bar thru the c and to the left of R of For.   Another variety has an upright bar thru the c and to right of R.   Listed by Asociation Numismatica F-150, Conte Porras p.101, Cunningham CZ190a, Curto A102-5, Henkle CZ-68, Plowman MT-100.05, Plumer p.4, Schimmel 48.  Brass, size 21 mm and weigth 4.39 grams.

Howard Albrook NCO Club, 25c, Green Aluminum, Small Letters. Canal Zone, Date unknown ca. 1960's. Green colored aluminum.  The obverse has NCO Open Mess in the center with Howard Albrook above and Canal Zone below.  The lettering in the center is smaller than on a similar green colored token.  This token is also different in that there is no dash between the words Howard Albrook.  The reverse has a large 25c with In Trade across the number.  Listed by Plowman as MT-117.25 the size is about 28.5 mm and weight  2.13 grams. -.

Aviation Commissioned Officers Mess, Navy APO 720, 5c Wine Mess, Blue. Canal Zone, Panama, ca 1940's. Plowman # - unlisted.  APO 720 - is identified as Upham, Coco Solo, C.Z. Cristobal, C.Z.  The chit reads Wine Mess with 5 Cents to the left, and Not Good If Detached below.  Black print on a blue color chit.  The back side is blank.  While there is no ID on the chit itself, the chit came from a booklet that reads Aviation Commissioned Officers Mess / Navy 720 / Issued to Lt. J. B. Scott / On. / Not Transferable - Not Good If Detached.   At the top left an aviation symbol and the right $1.00.  At the bottom left the serial number of the booklet 3278.  The chit booklet would have contained multiples of the chit 5c denomination, and perhaps other denominations.  The chit booklet cover  is a photocopy of the original booklet furnished to me by the prior owner of the chit.  The chit is about 22.5 mm x 51 mm.

Coco Solo, Canal Zone Submarine Base, Beer Chit. Canal zone, Panama, ca 1940's. This is a photocopy of a booklet cover for Beer Chits.  (Note:  I have a chit similar  to what would have been in the booklet, but not available for photographing now - a future listing).  The booklet cover was furnished to me by Garry Arva.  It reads Cash Chit Book.  To the right is the booklet number, F  7956.  Below is written:  Ship's Service Department / U. S. Submarine Base / Coco Solo, C.Z. / 12 - Beer Chits - $1.00 / Chits Not Good If Detached. .

Fort Clayton, Canal Zone 25c Red, Series A1. Canal Zone, Panama, pre-1963. Plowman #CT-81.25, Series 1.  The obverse reas N.C.O. Open Mess / Fort Clayton / Canal Zone.  To the bottom left Not Good IF Detached.  The serial number 1251A.  All printed in black on a red background.  To the right 25 in bold black.  Under that Cents in red against black.   The back side is blank.  The size is approx. 23 x 51 mm.

Open Mess / Fort Clayton / Canal Zone.  To the bottom left Not good if detached.  Printed in black on a white background.  The serial number 7501A is in red.  To the right 20 Cents white on black background.  The back side is blank.  Approx. 23 x 51 mm, cancellation holes.

Open Mess / Fort Clayton / Canal Zone.  To the bottom left Not good if detached.  Printed on in black on a blue background.  The serial number 7501A is in red.  To the right 25 Cends blue on a black background.  The back side is blank.  Approx. Size 23 x 51 mm, cancellation holes.

Fort Davis, C.Z., A.A.I.C. 5 c Green, Series B. Canal Zone, Panama, ca 1964-69. Plowman #CT-102.05.   Obverse reads A.A.I.C. NCO Open Mess / Fort Davis, C.Z. / 23751B with Void if detached to the left.  The words are black against a green background and the serial number in red.  To the right 5 Cents in green against a black background box.   A.A.I.C. Stands for Atlantic Area Installation Command.  5c green chit, this one being somewhat faded in color.  Serial number 23751B, a pair of 2 chits, cancellation punches.  The back side is blank.  Overall the pair is about 46 mm high x 50.5 mm wide.
