Description

when the civil war was over, the reunions of the soldiers were called encampments. each year when the get togethers took place, there were medals sold to defray costs. several of these i have from the late eighteen hundreds.

21 items (showing items 1–20)

Michigan 1889. Used at michigan encampment, 1889. Crisp copper brown. The medal is of Ulysess  S. Grant and looks to be uncirculated.  This medal is 32mm in size.  The back side says it is the 11th annual encampment held in Bay City, Michigan with dates of March 13,14,15 of 1889.  It does have a loop and ring on the top.

1892 Encampment medal. United states, 1892. A silvered medal that started me looking at GAR tokens. This was my very first token, and was purchased so i could examine it and try to figure out was G.A.R. Stood for.  My appreciation grew and grew not only for the time period, but for the history and the effort to regroup a country.  This piece measures 34mm and has the large logo on the backside.  It also has a loop and hole on the top.

Milwaukee 1889. Used at milwaukee encampment, 1889. Nice white metal piece. 23rd national encampment.  The back side had no writting, but has a nice safety pin type clasp.  This medal measures 36mm.  The shoreline of Milwaukee is shown on the front of this medal.

1892 white metal piece. United states, 1892. A very well detailed piece with a ribbon attached. This elaborate piece measures about 36mm in size.  The ribbon is authentic in age.  This is a 26th national encampment medal and is done in white metal.  The builldings and soldier are very distinct.  The GAR logo covers the entire back side.

Admiral Dewey, Cincinnati. Us mint, 1898. Grand army of the republic 32nd encampment. This is a very shinny copper medal dated September 5-10 of 1898.   Dewey was on several of the encampment medals from different states.  This medal shows Dewey in full military dress and full mustache.  The medal measures 32mm.  On the back Ohio is shortened to O.

1892 Washington D.C. medal. U.s. Mint, 1892. 26th national encampment medal for the citizens executive committee. This is an extremely exacting piece with much detail.  The inscription on the front lists 1871 justitia omnibus.  The back says G.A.R.  Sept 1892.  This piece would be in the uncirculated category except the someone filed off the loop on the top.  The stars and details and lines are excellent.

1909 Lincoln medal. U.s. Mint, 1909. The dates on the front show up nicely, 1809 to 1909.  These dates start with the birth of Abe lincoln.  The back inscription is as follows.  "This medal was struck for the grand army of the republic in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln.  This medal was very well done with fine hair detail.  The inscription of the front says "with malice toward none, with charity for all. .this piece measures about 74mm.  This medal was designed by Jules Edouarg Roine.

Founder Medal. US, Shortly after GAR was started. B.F. Stephenson pictured as the founder. W.G. Veazey as commander in chief is also pictured on the front.  This is an uncirculated medal made of white metal.  On the back is pictured the GAR logo and the years 1861-1865.  One of the finest pieces in my emcampment collection.  This piece measures about 33mm and is holed.
