Description

For a complete analysis and understanding of the different types of countermarks, a must have for your Numismatic Library should be the book "Numismatic Study Of The First Puerto Rico Coin, The Flor De Liz Countermarks Of 1885" by puerto rican Arquelogist Dr. Ovidio Dávila Dávila, published in September of 2012 in spanish. For instructions on how to obtain this work you should visit our Puerto Rico Numismatic Society site, http://www.sociedadnumismaticapr.org/SNPR/Orden_Libro_FdL.html.    In 1884, all circulating foreign coins were countermarked with a fleur-de-lis by the different Custom Houses of Puerto Rico as an authentication mark for circulation on the Island. Readily available Spanish 5 and 10 Centimos coins and Pesos, as well as, 2, 4, and 8 Reales coins, found themselves with a well-struck fleur-de-lis incused on one of its surfaces.  During 1884 United States coins, including 20 Cent pieces, Quarters, Halves, and Dollars also went through the "counterstamp" process of the Puerto Rico Custom Houses.  All countermarked coins remained in circulation until 1894 when most were redeemed by the Puerto Rican banks. In 1895, silver 20 centavos and 1 peso coins were introduced by Puerto Rico itself, followed in 1896 by silver 5, 10 and 40 centavos.
