Description

The following are the different medal series commissioned and sculpted by Gabriel Vicente Maura from 1968's-1990's. Mr. Vicente Maura was a prominent business man who was involved in Puerto Rico politics in the MPI party (Movimiento Pro Independentista),  made significant contributions to the game of chess,  and enjoyed being a sculptor in the commemorative medals field as a hobby.  He was the owner of a furniture store in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, known as "Muebleria La Luz".  These medals were minted in Barcelona Spain at "Acuñaciones Españolas, SA".  One of his most popular medal theme was the "Centenario Del Grito De Lares".  El Grito de Lares (The Cry of Lares)—also referred as the Lares uprising, the Lares revoltLares rebellion or even Lares Revolution—was the first major revolt against Spanish rule and call for independence in Puerto Rico. The short-lived revolt was planned by Ramon Emeterio Betances and Segundo Ruiz Belvis. It began on September 23, 1868 in the town of Lares, Puerto Rico, and spread rapidly to various revolutionary cells throughout the island.
