About Us

NeoCollect is a new website for collectors of fine and decorative arts, antiques and other valuable collectibles.  While this pilot site is still being developed, we hope to make NeoCollect the best way for serious collectors to manage and showcase their collections, to connect with others and to share their expertise. NeoCollect was started by John Sallay, a longtime collector of early American antiques, decorative arts and historical medals, and school award medals from around the world.

John observed that over the last few years, the Internet has made it much easier for collectors to buy, sell and research items of special interest, but it has not yet helped serious collectors manage and display their collections on the web, or share their knowledge more broadly through the items they have collected.  Major museums have adopted sophisticated software to manage and display their collections online, but it’s extremely expensive and difficult to use, so even most museums have not yet placed many of their holdings on the web.

By taking the basic concept behind museum software, simplifying it and providing it online for collectors without a lot of computer experience to use, NeoCollect allows you to:

  • Easily and inexpensively manage and keep an inventory of your collection, for your own use, for insurance purposes, to prepare for a sale or for estate planning
  • Display it proudly online for others to admire and appreciate, and to share your expertise
  • More easily enjoy your own collection, even if it must be stored away for safekeeping
  • Build knowledge of the history, interrelationships, rarity and value of the items you have or wish to acquire
  • Make new connections with other serious collectors of similar items
  • Work together with other collectors to create comprehensive catalogues that can be published online, and then eventually in published book form
  • Let others know what items you would like to add to your collection, or offer for sale other items that no longer fit

NeoCollect is easy to use, with every collection and every item completely private and viewable only by you, until you decide to make them public.  And even when you decide to share parts of your collection with others, you can either keep your identity private by displaying only your NeoCollect user name, or provide a brief personal profile and description of your collection.

NeoCollect displays your collections much as they would be shown in a museum or auction catalogue.  You can display multiple collections and sub-collections, and as many items in each collection as you choose.  Each item is presented with one or two representative images, basic descriptive information, its provenance or history of ownership, and whatever historical or other background you decide to include.

The information for each item is entered on five simple input tabs, and you can include as much or as little information as you would like about each item. NeoCollect allows you to keep track of private item details that only you can see, such as when and where you acquired the item, how much you paid for it, current location and valuation information, and private notes for only you to see.

You can share a particular collection or item with any number of friends, even those who do not yet use NeoCollect and who may not even be collectors.  Others who view your public items can write comments and click on the “thumbs up” icon to let you know they appreciated seeing the items from your collection that you’ve shared. Once you have created a NeoCollect collection and entered several items, you can arrange selected items in a slide show or special catalogue to share with others.  You can also invite others to collaborate with you in creating a catalogue, each contributing items and information which can be shared more broadly on NeoCollect and eventually published in physical book form.

This NeoCollect pilot website is currently set up for medals only, but we will soon be adding templates for tokens and ancient coins, and eventually for a broad spectrum of fine art, antiques and other valuable collectibles.
