Overview
We introduce NeoCollect and tour its major features. Welcome to NeoCollect, the
new way for collectors of fine and decorative arts, antiques and other
valuable collectibles to manage and showcase their collections, to connect
with other serious collectors and to share their expertise. Over the last few years, the
Internet has made it much easier for collectors to buy, sell and research
items of special interest, but it has not yet helped serious collectors
manage and display their collections on the web, and share their collecting
knowledge more broadly. While major museums have adopted
sophisticated software to manage and display their collections online,
it’s extremely expensive and difficult to use, so even most museums
have not yet placed many of their holdings on the web. By taking the basic concept
behind museum software, simplifying it and providing it online for collectors
without a lot of computer experience to use, NeoCollect allows you to:
NeoCollect is easy to use,
with every collection and every item completely private and viewable
only by you, until you decide what to make public. Even when you decide to share
parts of your collection with others, you can either keep your identity
private by displaying only your NeoCollect user name, or provide a brief
personal profile and description of your collection. NeoCollect displays your collections
much as they would be shown in a museum or auction catalogue. You can display multiple collections
and sub-collections, and as many items in each collection as you choose. Each item is displayed with
one or two representative images, basic descriptive information, its
provenance or history of ownership, and whatever historical or other
background you decide to include. Clicking on an item’s title
brings you to the item detail page, where you can view additional photographs,
such as close-ups of identifying marks, the case or other relevant historical
documents. Clicking on a photograph brings
you to a higher resolution image, where you can zoom in and explore
the details. The information for each item
is entered on five simple input tabs, including basic data and images,
physical details, condition, provenance and descriptive details, where
you can include as much or as little information as you would like about
each item. NeoCollect allows you to keep
track of private item details that only you can see, such as when and
where you acquired the item, how much you may have paid for it, current
location and valuation information, and private notes for only you to
see. You can share a particular
collection or item with any number of friends, even those who do not
yet use NeoCollect and who may not even be collectors, but when you
do, the private item information is not shared. Others who view your public
items can write comments and click on the “thumbs up” icon to let
you know they appreciated seeing the items from your collection that
you’ve shared. You and other NeoCollect users
can also send each other private messages. All of these messages are
handled completely within NeoCollect, using only NeoCollect user names
unless you choose to disclose your email address. NeoCollect allow you to identify
keep track of your favorite items, both from your own collection and
those owned by others. You can search your collections
for a particular item or piece of information, and others using this
NeoCollect search function will be able explore items or collections
that you have marked Public which they otherwise might never have seen. Your NeoCollect collection
is organized in a tree hierarchy, much like the file system on your
computer. You can set up and reorganize
your collection however you like, moving sub-collections and items around
in the hierarchy. In addition, each item can
be assigned a status such as currently owned, previously owned, owned
but available for sale or trade, and you can even include rare items
that you do not own but would like to acquire. You can connect with other
collectors interested in similar items by joining or starting a NeoCollect
community. Community members can link their collections to a community
for others to browse. The community’s classified section can
even help you build and refine your collection. Once you have created a NeoCollect
collection and entered several items, you can arrange selected items
in a slide show or catalogue to share with others. You can also invite others
to collaborate with you in creating a catalogue, each contributing items
and information which can eventually be shared more broadly on NeoCollect
and even published in physical book form through our publishing partners. This NeoCollect pilot website
is currently set up only for medals, but we will soon be adding templates
for tokens and ancient coins, and eventually for a broad spectrum of
fine art, antiques and other valuable collectibles. For more features, see the
Entering Collection Information video. Then start using NeoCollect
to manage and showcase your collection, connect with other serious collectors
and share your expertise. NeoCollect Videos
