New York, c.1840. Gold. Diameter 34.7mm, 17.1 grams. Designed by P. P. Duggan (signed P.P. DUGGAN DEL. at left edges of both obverse and reverse), engraved by Ellis & Wilson (signed ELLIS & WILSON. F. at right edges of both obverse and reverse). Obverse: A complex grouping including a bare-chested Native American with feathered headdress, a sailor holing a hat and sextant, Liberty holding a pole with Phrygian cap and a distaff, and Justice wearing a laurel crown and holding the scales of justice in one hand and a sword in the other, all surrounding two shields, above a banner with EXCELSIOR; FREE ACADEMY above and NEW YORK below. Reverse: Winged angel standing on a cloud, with an owl at her feet, placing a laurel wreath on the head of a kneeling youth who is holding a book and drawing tools in his left hand and resting his right hand on a palette, with a transit and globe behind; Richd. R. Bowker engraved on a banner above, and Painting engraved on a banner below. Prooflike uncirculated.
