Gold, 18K. Diameter 69.8mm, 155.6 grams. Sculpted by R. Tait McKenzie (signed in the field to the right of the bust), struck by Medallic Art Company (signed MEDALLIC ART CO. N.Y. on edge). Obverse: Bust of Charles P. Norton, facing left; around THE CHANCELLOR'S MEDAL, with CHARLES P. NORTON FOUNDER on ribbon and shield of the University below; sculprtor's monogram RTM 1925 to the right of the bust. Reverse: AWARDED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF BUFFALO TO (engraved) DAVID LAWRENCE FOR EMINENT SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY. In original red leather case.

Charles P. Norton (1858-1923) was the sixth chancellor of the University of Buffalo and served in that office 1905-1920. In 1922 he added a clause to his will establishing the Chancellor Medal.  It was to be awarded annually on Washington's birthday at the University exercises to some citizen who performed some great thing which is identified with Buffalo. It may be a great civic or political act, a great book, a great work of art, a great scientific achievement, or any other thing which in itself is truly great and ennobling and which dignifies the performer and Buffalo in the eyes of the world.  It has not, however, been awarded every year.  David Lawrence (1888-1973), founder and longtime publisher of U.S. News & World Report, was awarded this gold Chancellor's Medal in 1939.
