Safavids. Shah Isma‘il I, AH 907-930 / AD 1501-1524. Shahi, date missing. Balkh. Album 2576. Zeno 59931. Silver. Diameter 29mm, 9.43 grams. Obverse:  "al-sultan el-'adil al-kamil el-hadi al-wali
 abul' muzaffar shah isma'il bahadur khan es-safawi khallad Allah mulkahu wa sultanahu zarb balkh" (the sultan the just the perfect the spiritual guide the friend father of the victorious one Shah Isma'il valiant khan al-safawi may Allah perpetuate his reign and his sultanate struck at Balkh). Reverse: Centre: Shiite Kalima. Margins: 12 Imams. Central square formed by 4 'Ali. The other 8 arranged clockwise, start at top): muhammad hasan / muhammad hasan / muhammad hussein / ja'far musi. VF. First silver standard, (SNAT XIVc:904). Very rare.This coin must have been struck sometime between 917H (when Balkh came under Safavid control) and 924h (when the new weight standard was introduced).
