25 c 1904 Stamped Panama Canal 1907

Representative Images

in Panama Misc Exonumia (currently in collection)
Panama, 1907. Panama 25c 1904 KM #4 that has had part of the reverse shaved or planed down removing the words:  Veinticinco Centesimos De Balboa G.12.500 Ley 0.900.  The center of the coins was left, which is the Panama Coat of Arms.  Around the shaved area is stamped Panama Canal 1907.  The Rulau book on Latin American Tokens lists a somewhat similar piece, catalog # CZ 79.  However, that piece has the entire reverse planed off with the word Panama at the top and Canal at the bottom with 1907 in the area where the Coat of Arms had been.  The reason for the counterstamp is presently unknown, possibly a souvenir of some event that was important in Panama or the Canal Zone in 1907.  Size is just under 30 mm and weight 12.13 grams.  Over the years I have seen 4 or 5 pieces.
