in Panama Tokens (currently in collection)
Panama. Merchant token, no date, but ca 1864.  The obverse has a large 2 1/2 Cts within a beaded circle.  The legend reads Coll Brandon & Co. Colon (Aspinwall).  The reverse shows a steam train with a palm tree behind.  Listed By Russell Rulau in Latin American Tokens as # Col 22 (copper), 22A (brass), and 23, 24, 25 overstruck on a U.S. Large cent of 1849 or 1851; a New York Civil War card of John Matthews, 1863; or a Bank of Upper Canada 1854.  There are also a couple other varieties known:  struck an 1860 Abraham Lincoln Railsplitter of the West political medalet, DeWitt #AL1860-41; and a token not overstruck, but without the denomination - not known to me, if struck without the denomination or removed later.   The city of Aspinwall was renamed Colon around 1860 to 1863.  The exact business of Coll Brandon & Co is unknown at this time.  One of the more visually impressive tokens of Panama.  Proof-like uncirculated surfaces, this one appears to be copper.  Size is about 27.5 mm, and weight 8.91 grams.
