in Panama Metal ID Checks (currently in collection)
Panama / Canal Zone, 1920. Used from January 1, 1920 until August 1938.  The first 20,000 serial numbered ID checks were reserved for gold employees, and those 20,001 and above for silver employees.  Listed in various references including Plowman #CK-3.3; Hamlin #PC-25; Henkle # C.Z. #104; Asociacion Numismatico # ID 13; and Rulau # CZ 75.  The obverse reads Panama Canal / 4510.  Above the slot at the top is Am. Ry. S. Co. N.Y. Which stands for American Railroad Supply Co.    The reverse side of these ID checks is usually blank.  However, on this particular on is the engraving:  J. T. Burch / Jan 9 / 1920.  He probably was the employee assigned to this check number.  Possibly the date represents the date he received the check or his date of hire ?  Further research is warranted. The brass ID check is 8-sided, 38 mm from top to bottom, and varies at other angles from 36 to 38 mm.  The weight is 8.48 grams.
