Coat Of Arms 2 1/2c, ca 1907-14, Panama Pattern or Token

Representative Images

Panama, ca 1907-14. The obverse shows the Panama Coat Of Arms.  The reverse has a large 2 1/2 in the center with the words Dos Y Medios Centesimos De Balboa around.  The size is slightly over 21 mm, and weight 4.73 grams.  The reverse side is out of rotation.  When the coin is flipped over the 2 1/2 points toward upper left.  There are a number of scratches on the obverse extending from the rim to the eagle.  The origin of this piece is unknown.  I first encountered an example at the 1971 A.N.A. Convention, when Panama coin dealer Dan Sander sold me one.  Present was Panama specialist, Dr. Edward Majilton.  Both believed the piece was a pattern for the Panama 2 1/2 cent coin of 1907 as there are similarities.  Years later Panama specialist William Randel felt this may be a hacienda token ca 1914.  Over the years I have seen 4 or 5 pieces offered, all of which had some degree of circulation.  Further research is indicated.
