in Panama Metal ID Checks (currently in collection)
Panama / Canal Zone, ca. 1905-07. The obverse reads Isthmian Canal Commisson around the edges with the number 25223 in the center.  The reverse side is blank.  The size is about 38 mm x 58 mm at the angles.  It is diamond shape, holed as made.  The weight including the ribbon and hanger is 14.52 grams.  This ID check is similar to the one listed in brass.  This particular medal has been nickel plated.  The ID check does not photo well due to the high gloss of the plating.  Slight scuffs show up dark and distracting in the photo.  The ID check is suspended from a ribbon and hanger.  The exact purpose of this is not known.  However, speculation is that the ID check was sold at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition as a souvenir.   Many souvenirs including other ID checks were offered at the PPIE.  The black ribbon may represent mourning for the many workers lives lost while building the Panama Canal.  Further research is indicated.
