in Panama Tokens (currently in collection)
Panama, ca 1864. Obverse Panama Railroad steams to right with single palm tree in background.  Reverse Coll Brandon & Co / Colon (Aspinwall) around central denomination 2 1/2 Cts.   Struck over 1854 Bank of Upper Canada halfpenny token.  The undertype interferes with  the reverse legends to a small degree.  The overstrike and undertype line up precisely on the same vertical axis.  Some little flecks of silvering on the obverse suggests that silverning remained trapped in that die when this piece was struck, perhaps from the Lincoln token overstrike that is also known.  It is possible that the token was struck by Scoville Company of Waterbury, Connecticut.  This token is ex-Q. David Bowers collection.  Size is 27.5 mm and weight 7.36 grams.

Provenance:

  • Stack's The Philadelphia Americana Sale; September 30, 2010 thru October 2, 2010, lot #3531
  • Q. David Bowers
