Yorkshire, England, 1811. Grimshaw I #54 (pp.21-23). Silver. Diameter 53.4mm, 58.9 grams. Obverse: An extensive allegory featuring the sun's rays shining from the left on Athena, who is seated on a throne in the clouds with her spear and shield, attended by a kneeling woman behind her and owl at her feet, and surveying a scene of winged putti holding the school's "Register of Honor" and a scroll showing the elevation of the school building; one of the putti flies toward her with a laurel wreath; the temple of fame sits on a moutaintop in the background; below is a ribbon with the legend POSTERA CRESCES LAUDE REGENS (Grow From Future Accomplishment, from Horace's Carmina, 3.30). Reverse: An open oak wreath, with the legend HONOS ALIT ARTES (Honor Nourishes the Arts) above, and THORP ARCH SEMINARY below; engraved within the wreath is the inscription "To Geo. Hotham the best Proficient in Drawing, June, 1811". In original leather case.
