1915 Pan-American Scientific Congress

in United States Medals (currently in collection)
United States, 1915. Obverse shows figures of Science and Peace flanking a map of the Western Hemisphere, Pan-American Union building below.  The legend hails Friendship And Solidarity Through Scientific Achievement. The reverse shows a Lamp of Knowledge over Second / Pan-American / Scientific Congress / Dec.27.1915 - Jan.8.1916 / Washington / U.S.A.  Decorative branch at bottom and to left side.  Struck in silver.  The wear on the medal suggests that it was perhaps carried as a pocket piece for some time. I note Stack's sold one in Bronze, 58 mm, Uncrculated, in their January 26-27, 2010, Americana Auction, lot #4869, realized $690.  That lot was ex-Charles E. Barber collection, a past Chief Engraver of U.S. Mint.   Stack's indicated the medal was attributed to Charles Barber (as engraver of the medal) and possibly minted by the U.S. Mnit. .
