in Betts Medals (currently in collection)
1720. Bronze. Obverse Legend translates " to laugh is to rule". Reverse legend translates " the moon is our leader and Momus [the god of nonsense] is our guide. Most believe this medal does not belong in the John Law series. Alphonse de Witte says the following " This medal was struck in France towards the close of the reign of Louis XIV, as a decoration for a Society of the gay courtiers of that monarch, who called themselves ' the Regiment de la Calotte ' [ Regiment of the Skullcap]. This society proposed to reform the customs and the style of their time by turning everything into ridicule" Considered an associated piece in the Law series because two renowned numismatists have included it in the series.
