Puerto Rico Baseball Events (21)

II Serie Del Caribe CBBC, Prensa . 1950. Press participant Badge medal, 1950 II Baseball Caribbean Series, San Juan Puerto Rico. In baseball, the second edition of the Caribbean Series (Serie del Caribe) was played in 1950. It was held from February 21 through February 27 featuring the champion teams from Cuba (Almendares), Panama (Carta Vieja), Puerto Rico (Caguas) and Venezuela (Magallanes). The format consisted of 12 games, each team facing the other teams twice, and the games were played at Sixto Escobar Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The championship exceeded expectations of fans, to achieve full exceed Sixto Escobar Park of 10,000 to 12,000 seats per game. The Series had to go more than the scheduled 12 games when both Panama and Puerto Rico teams ended with a similar 4-2 record. Panama clinched the title after beating Puerto Rico in a tiebreaker game. The Panamanian team, who entered the series as underdog, was led by manager/center fielder Wayne Blackburn, pitcher Chet Brewer (2-0), and third baseman Joe Tuminelli, who hit two home runs with seven RBI as he received Most Valuable Player honors. Puerto Rico was led by Luis Rodríguez Olmo, who managed and hit.292, and pitcher Luis Arroyo (2-0), who posted a 1.72 ERA and allowed eight hits in 15-2/3 innings. Other significant players in the roster included right fielder Willard Brown (.348), pitcher Wilmer Fields (1-0, one HR), first baseman Vic Power and pitcher Rubén Gómez. Even with the Cubans heavily favored to win the Series, they only went 3-3. The team was managed by catcher Fermín Guerra, and included Al Gionfriddo, Conrado Marrero, Willie Miranda, René Monteagudo y Roberto Ortiz. Slugger Héctor Rodríguez led the hitters with a.474 batting average (9-for-19). Pitcher Bob Hooper ended 2-0. The hapless Venezuelan team was managed by Vidal López and finished with a 1-5 record. The roster included Alex Carrasquel, Chico Carrasquel, Pete Coscarart, Jim Pendleton and Chucho Ramos. The team's only victory came behind a strong pitching effort from starter Santiago Ullrich in the opener.

Miguel Hernández Agosto is a Puerto Rican politician whose service in government has spanned several generations. Finished his bachelor studies at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. Then, went to Michigan where he graduated from Michigan State University with a Masters degree and from University of Michigan with a PhD. Years later, he concluded his studies with a JD from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico. He is a member of the Latino fraternity Phi Iota Alpha, the oldest inter-collegiate Greek-letter organization established for Latino Americans. Hernández Agosto served as Secretary of the Puerto Rico Department of Agriculture in the 1960s under the governorships of Luis Muñoz Marín and Roberto Sánchez Vilella. In the 1970s, he entered elective politics as a Senator at-large. In 1981 he became the Senate of Puerto Rico's ninth President, a position he held for 12 years. In 1993, after the Popular Democratic Party of Puerto Rico's defeat in the 1992 elections, he became the Senate Minority Leader of his party until 1996. A Democrat at the national level, after winning a bruising reorganization primary campaign in 1988 against former Governor Carlos Romero Barceló, he became State Chair of the Democratic Party of Puerto Rico, a post he held until 1992. Within his local party, after former Governor Rafael Hernández Colón's defeat in 1976, he became party president, a post he held until the former Governor decided to run for Governor in 1980, which incumbent Gov. Romero narrowly won. Hernández Agosto is currently a part-time law professor at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico School of Law and practices law. In 2008, he chaired then-Gov. Aníbal Acevedo Vilá's unsuccessful reelection campaign. Medal turn. Rare.

Minted in Argentina, PIANA BS, AS, Artist - Roberti, PUERTO RICO, 1989 INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE, INVITE C.I.O. 95th Session Badge, item belonged to JANETTE CAMPBELL and ROBERTO GUILLERMO PEPER. Jeannette Campbell’s father, John, was a Scotsman living in Argentina. During a visit to Europe in 1914, his family got caught up in the First World War, and was unable to return to South America. Jeannette Campbell was then born in France, but the family returned to Argentina soon afterwards. There, she learned swimming with her older sister Dorothy, and quickly became Argentina’s best swimmer. A good performance at the 1935 South American Swimming Championships earned her a place as Argentina’s only woman in the 1936 Olympic squad. There she won her country’s first Olympic swimming medal, placing second behind Rie Mastenbroek. Her silver time of 1:06.4 stood as a South American Record for 28 years. Campbell won 12 South American titles, and 13 national championships. She married fellow Belgrano AC swimmer Roberto Peper, and their daughter Susana also became an Olympian in 1964. Roberto Guillermo Peper of Argentina was South American record holder and finalist in the 4x100m freestyle relay at the Games of the X Olympiad in Los Angeles in 1932. He subsequently took part in the PanAmerican and South American Games. He also won a number of rowing and water-polo titles. Jeannette, his wife of 55 years, was the first Argentine women to take part in the Olympic Games. She won a silver medal in the 100m freestyle at the Games of the XI Olympiad in Berlin.

En Puerto Rico se han efectuado competencias de Tiro desde que los conquistadores españoles trajeron sus armas de fuego. Las competencias de Tiro en Puerto Rico, comienzan después del 1900, y hasta la Primera Guerra Mundial se limitaban principalmente a competencias militares. Es durante la década del veinte que se inician los esfuerzos para convertir al Tiro en Deporte. Es durante esta época que la población civil se le abren las puertas para practicar abiertamente este deporte. Esta apertura provocó un auge sin precedentes en este deporte. En Puerto Rico, en la organización del Tiro, existen Federaciones: la Puerto Rico Shooting Association, Puerto Rico Shooting Federation. Fundadas en Puerto en años recientes, ambas están afiliadas a la Unión Internacional de Tiro, y al Comité Olímpico de Puerto Rico. Deporte se organizó y se desarrolló en nuestra Isla gracias a los dedicados esfuerzos de personas eminentemente deportivas tales como Ramiro E. Ortiz, Manuel A. Rodríguez, Fernando Chardón, Alberto Guerrero, Charles Pennock y Fred Guillermety. El deporte de Tiro ha tenido gloriosos atletas en el pasado, competidores tales como Manuel A. Rodríguez, Alberto Guerrero, Jaime Loyola, León Lyons, Oscar Imbert, Fernando Miranda y Rafael Acosta.
 

Puerto Rico Swimming Competition Events (24)

C.C.C.A.N. CONFEDERACION CENTROAMERICANA Y DEL CARIBE DE AFICIONADOS A LA NATACION Puerto Rico. 1969. White metal. Swim Events, Participante, Para la década del 30, la construcción de piscinas había tenido gran auge y se había desarrollado tanto interés por el deporte que se celebraron competencias entre Ponce y San Juan. Los ponceños, don Félix Juan y Juan Eugenio Serrallés, William González, Efrén y Néstor Torres, entre otros, y San Juan con Luis Saavedra, Orlin Goble, René López Duprey, Diego Luis Martín y otros, sentaron las bases para la organización futura del deporte, habiendo sido uno de ellos, López Duprey, quien encabezó el movimiento que organizó en definitiva la Natación en la Isla. En el 1937, indicó un grupo de nadadores su deseo de formar parte de la delegación de los IV Juegos Deportivos Centroamericanos y del Caribe que estaban programados para celebrarse en 1938 en Panamá. Sin embargo, la Natación no se desarrolló como se esperaba hasta fines de la década del 50 cuando viene a residir a la isla el Coronel Henry R. Brewerton, quien había sido en su juventud una figura destacada del deporte de la Natación. Brewerton y López Duprey unieron sus esfuerzos para continuar el desarrollo de este deporte. Aunque no se contaba con los fondos para llevar una delegación numerosa, gracias a la gestión entusiasta de don Justo "Tito" Rivera Cabrera, entonces Presidente de la Comisión de Recreo y Deportes, se envió un pequeño grupo de nadadores que aunque no ganó medallas, realizó una buena labor. Solamente Michael Baker en Clavados, figuró con prominencia, pero de esta experiencia los nadadores puertorriqueños aprendieron mucho de la técnica nueva, especialment Antonio del Valle. Continua en proxima medalla.
 
C.C.C.A.N. CONFEDERACION CENTROAMERICANA Y DEL CARIBE DE AFICIONADOS A LA NATACION Puerto Rico. 1969. Bronze. Swim Events, Rev-Campeonatos De Infantil Y Juvenil VI Natacion, VI Clavados, y Waterpolo I. Continuacion - Es en el año 1957, un grupo de padres entusiastas se toma la iniciativa de organizar algunos equipos, siendo la sede de éstos mayormente algunos hoteles de lujo de nuestra capital (San Juan). Es de esta forma que dan comienzo algunas competencias en forma dual donde solamente se competía en el estilo libre, ya que se desconocía la técnica de los otros estilos. En el año 1957 se organiza oficialmente la Asociación de Natación de Puerto Rico formando parte de ella los equipos del Caparra Country Club, Condado Beach Hotel, Hotel Caribe Hilton y dos equipos del ejército y la Marina de los Estados Unidos. Fue bajo la dirección de sus primeros oficiales, el Sr. René López Duprey como presidente y el Coronel Henry B. Brewerton, que la Asociación de Natación de Puerto Rico solicita y obtiene el reconocimiento de la Federación Internacional de Natación Amateur (FINA) y el Comité Olímpico de Puerto Rico. Ya estaban sentadas las base para el desarrollo de la natación en Puerto Rico. Es así como en el año 1959 se acepta en Chicago, durante la celebración de los Juegos Panamericanos, que Puerto Rico sea escenario en el 1960 del Primer Campeonato Centroamericano y del Caribe, Infantil y Juvenil de Natación y Clavados. Para que así fuera, se modifica la piscina de la Estación Naval en San Juan que fue el escenario de esta competencia. Se siguen cosechando logros año tras año, y ya en el 1961 sale de nuestra Isla el primer equipo de natación que nos representará en el Segundo Campeonato Infantil y Juvenil celebrado en El Salvador. Fue grande nuestro éxito al lograr cuatro de los ocho trofeos de grupos por edades. El año 1962 es de grata recordación para todos los amantes del deporte de la natación puertorriqueña. Fue durante este año, en los IX juegos Centro Americanos celebrados en Kingston, Jamaica, que Puerto Rico logra sus dos primeras medallas de oro en estos juegos. Recae este honor en las nadadoras Julie Milotz en los 100 metros estilo libre y Vivían Carrión en los 100 metros dorso. Año 1963: nuevos y mayores logros para la natación puertorriqueña. Puerto Rico gana el Tercer Campeonato Centro Americano Infantil y Juvenil de Natación y Clavados, celebrado en Méjico. Ya también en este año se organiza por primera vez una competencia dual con un equipo de Estados Unidos, el Washington Capitols. También somos representados en los Juegos Panamericanos celebrados en Sao Paulo, Brasil. Ya el nombre de Puerto Rico se hace sentir en las competencias internacionales de natación de Puerto Rico participan nuevamente en las Olimpíadas Mundiales, esta vez en Tokio, Japón. Triunfan nadadores en el Cuarto Campeonato Centro Americano Infantil celebrado en Cali, Colombia. Llega el 1966 y la natación puertorriqueña se llena de gloria cuando Anita Lallande, copa los honores en la natación de los X Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe celebrados en Puerto Rico. Seguida de otras dos triunfadoras puertorriqueñas, Melanie Laporte y Tina Moir. Margaret Harding también ganó medallas de oro para Puerto Rico. En la natación masculina Tito Pérez, Joey Ferraioli, Gary Goodner y Elliot Cheneux también lucieron. En la competencia de Clavados lograron Yolanda Feliciano y Jerry Anderson conquistan honores para Puerto Rico. Continua en proxima medalla.

Continuacion - De ahí en adelante, gracias a la ingente labor de la Asociación de Natación de Puerto Rico y de los buenos y dedicados entrenadores que han laborado en Puerto Rico y la construcción de más piscinas y otras facilidades, la Natación ha seguido un desarrollo ascendente produciendo figuras de la talla de Carlos Berrocal, cuarto lugar mundial en las Olimpíadas Mundiales celebradas en Montreal, en su evento de 100 metros espalda y otros como Fernando Canales, John Daly y José de Jesús que han escrito páginas brillantes en la historia de nuestra Natación. Como puertorriqueños nos llena de inmenso orgullo las notables ejecutorias de nuestro compatriota Jesús Vassallo, campeón mundial y figura de singulares méritos. Actualmente, la Asociación de Natación de Puerto Rico es el organismo que rige las cuatro disciplinas de los deportes acuáticos en Puerto Rico, a saber: natación, polo acuático, nado sincronizado y clavados. En los últimos años el Dr. Raúl Marcial Rojas, el Dr. Manuel de Jesús y el Ing. Orban Mendoza, quienes han dirigido este organismo, han continuado con esmero y dedicación junto a grupos de padres entusiastas y dedicados y a organismos como la Administración de Parques y Recreo, el desarrollo de este deporte. ORGANIZACIÓN En 1957 nace la Puerto Rico Swimming Association (luego se llamará Federación de Natación de Puerto Rico). En una reunión en el Caparra Country Club de Guaynabo, los señores Carlos Ruiz, René López Duprey, Tato de la Rosa y Ham Brewerton firman el documento para inscribir la P.R.S.A. En el Departamento de Estado del Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico. Los equipos miembros serán Condado, Caribe Hilton, Caparra, Navy, Buchannan y el Club Deportivo de Ponce. El 5 de noviembre de 1990 se radicó ante el Departamento de Estado el Certificado de Enmienda cambiando el nombre original a "Federación Puertorriqueña de Natación, Inc". La Federación ingresó a la (FINA) el 11 de septiembre 1958 y fue la #75 Federación Internacional de Natación Amateur. Durante estos cuarenta años que la Federación de Natación ha estado organizada han dirigido los siguientes presidentes: René López Duprey, Raúl Marcial, Manuel De Jesús, Orban Mendoza, William Cody, Reinaldo Vega, Jesús Rodríguez, Marcos Vecchini, Néstor Colón y José A. Morales (actual presidente). Continua en proxima medalla.

In-Ice, Curto H-9, Rotters 113, Fuerte Brooke, A raiz del cambio de soberania en el 1898, las fuerzas militares norteamericanas ocuparon todos los edificios militares espanoles en Puerto Rico. Una de la joyas de la arquitectura militar espanola era el complejo de edificios que rodeaba la Cuidadela del Morro. Las fuerzas norteamericanas ocuparon mas de 200 acre de estos terrenos con sus edificios para instalar los cuarteles generales del Ejercito en Puerto Rico. A esta reservacion se le dio el nombre de Fuerte Brooke en honor al primer gobernador militar en Puerto Rico, Mayor General John R. Brooke. El Fuerte Brooke incluia todo el Castillo del Morro con sus baluartes y el Campo del Morro hasta el Convento de Dominicos. De ahi hasta el Cuartel de Ballaja (Hospital Militar Rodriguez), la Casa Blanca y la parte posterior de la Fortaleza hasta el Baluarte de Santa Catalina. El 30 de diciembre de 1960, con la desactivacion del Comando Militar de las Antillas, el Fuerte Brooke paso a ser propiedad del Estado Libre Asociado. Coin turn. Rare.
