Panama Metal ID Checks (9)

Goodyear Rubber Tree Plantation. Panama, ca. 1935 to 1940's. David Plowman in his catalog  www.coinsofpanama.com  states: "Tentatively attributed as tree tags for Goodyear.  Goodyear started a rubber tree plantation in Panama in 1935.  According to one source, the plantation was located on the shores of the Lake Gatun.  Information is sketchy, but apparently either a rubber tree blight or the development of synthetic rubber or both brought about the end of the project after a few years."   Shape is octagon, 62 mm or slightly more, has 2 slots.  Stamped/engraved Good Year Panama, and serial number 171.  The Good Year foot symbol is between the words Good Year.   Brass, and weight 30.90 grams.  Known serial numbers include 171, 450, 461, 467 and 474.  Various catalogs list the piece:  Plowman #CK-35; Rulau #CZ 65; Catalogo Numismatico De Panama #ID 22. .

Hotel Central Key Tag. Panama, ca. 1950's - 1960's. This item is a key tag, not an ID check.  Since it is brass and resembles an ID check, I am listing in that category.  Obverse reads Hotel Central 113 Panama.  The 113 refers to the room number.  The reverse has a double lined circle.  The outer area reads If Carried Away Return Unsealed.  The inner area reads We Guarantee Postage.  The brass key tag is shaped like a sun with rays.  Is holed for supsension at the top. The size is 3 1/10" and weight 28.96 grams.

Isthmian Canal Commission, Plated w/hanger & ribbon. Panama / Canal Zone, ca. 1905-07. The obverse reads Isthmian Canal Commisson around the edges with the number 25223 in the center.  The reverse side is blank.  The size is about 38 mm x 58 mm at the angles.  It is diamond shape, holed as made.  The weight including the ribbon and hanger is 14.52 grams.  This ID check is similar to the one listed in brass.  This particular medal has been nickel plated.  The ID check does not photo well due to the high gloss of the plating.  Slight scuffs show up dark and distracting in the photo.  The ID check is suspended from a ribbon and hanger.  The exact purpose of this is not known.  However, speculation is that the ID check was sold at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition as a souvenir.   Many souvenirs including other ID checks were offered at the PPIE.  The black ribbon may represent mourning for the many workers lives lost while building the Panama Canal.  Further research is indicated.

Panama Misc Exonumia (12)

25 c 1904 Stamped Panama Canal 1907. Panama, 1907. Panama 25c 1904 KM #4 that has had part of the reverse shaved or planed down removing the words:  Veinticinco Centesimos De Balboa G.12.500 Ley 0.900.  The center of the coins was left, which is the Panama Coat of Arms.  Around the shaved area is stamped Panama Canal 1907.  The Rulau book on Latin American Tokens lists a somewhat similar piece, catalog # CZ 79.  However, that piece has the entire reverse planed off with the word Panama at the top and Canal at the bottom with 1907 in the area where the Coat of Arms had been.  The reason for the counterstamp is presently unknown, possibly a souvenir of some event that was important in Panama or the Canal Zone in 1907.  Size is just under 30 mm and weight 12.13 grams.  Over the years I have seen 4 or 5 pieces.

Panama 25c 1904 C/S Nov 14th 1910 (Visit of President Taft). A Panama 25c 1904 that has been stamped on the reverse side.  To the right of the Coat Of Arms is Nov.14th, and to the left 1910.  Research indicates that President Taft visited the Canal Zone on that date.  Probably sold as a souvenir of that event.  Click onto the reverse side photo and you can enlarge the image to see the counterstamp easier.  This is the only specimen I have observed in the past 45+ years of collecting Panama,  but being a souvenir, others may exist.

50c 1905 Stamped I9 / 4I / J.B.H.. Panama, 1905. Panama 50c 1905 KM #5 counter stamped I9 to the left of Balboa, and 4I to the right.  Above the date at the base of Balboa are the initials J.B.H.  At first glance it appears to be the date 19 / 41, but the 1 is clearly the initial I, perhaps the number 1 was not available ?  Likely a hand made souvenir of someone that either visited Panama or the Canal Zone in 1941 or perhaps of a military person stationed in the Canal Zone ?   The size is 36 mm and weight 24.76 grams.  Condition is Very Good to Fine.

Photograph of an uncut sheet of Paper Money, Colombia / Estado Soberano de Panama, ca 1865, 1-2-3-10 Pesos, Unsigned.  Dr.Edward Majilton owned the sheet shown in this photograph, which he furnished me in 1967.  He sold his sheet at auction in the mid-1970's, I do not know who is the current  owner.   I note that StacksBowers Auction August 16, 2011, lot #20092, sold a similar sheet, but signed and dated Aug 24, 1872.  That sheet sold for $26,550.  Dr. Majilton told me over 40 years ago that he was aware of a 2nd sheet.  However, I do not know, if it is the same one in the StacksBowers auction or yet another sheet.  At some point in the future I will include listings of individual notes 1, 2, 3, 10 pesos that are in my collection.

Panama Patterns, Pieforts, Trial Strikes, Unofficial Coins & Misc. Coins (16)

Coat Of Arms 2 1/2c, ca 1907-14, Panama Pattern or Token. Panama, ca 1907-14. The obverse shows the Panama Coat Of Arms.  The reverse has a large 2 1/2 in the center with the words Dos Y Medios Centesimos De Balboa around.  The size is slightly over 21 mm, and weight 4.73 grams.  The reverse side is out of rotation.  When the coin is flipped over the 2 1/2 points toward upper left.  There are a number of scratches on the obverse extending from the rim to the eagle.  The origin of this piece is unknown.  I first encountered an example at the 1971 A.N.A. Convention, when Panama coin dealer Dan Sander sold me one.  Present was Panama specialist, Dr. Edward Majilton.  Both believed the piece was a pattern for the Panama 2 1/2 cent coin of 1907 as there are similarities.  Years later Panama specialist William Randel felt this may be a hacienda token ca 1914.  Over the years I have seen 4 or 5 pieces offered, all of which had some degree of circulation.  Further research is indicated.

1915 Pan-American Scientific Congress. United States, 1915. Obverse shows figures of Science and Peace flanking a map of the Western Hemisphere, Pan-American Union building below.  The legend hails Friendship And Solidarity Through Scientific Achievement. The reverse shows a Lamp of Knowledge over Second / Pan-American / Scientific Congress / Dec.27.1915 - Jan.8.1916 / Washington / U.S.A.  Decorative branch at bottom and to left side.  Struck in silver.  The wear on the medal suggests that it was perhaps carried as a pocket piece for some time. I note Stack's sold one in Bronze, 58 mm, Uncrculated, in their January 26-27, 2010, Americana Auction, lot #4869, realized $690.  That lot was ex-Charles E. Barber collection, a past Chief Engraver of U.S. Mint.   Stack's indicated the medal was attributed to Charles Barber (as engraver of the medal) and possibly minted by the U.S. Mnit. .
